When we start the school year with "The Responsible Use of AI" training, students learn how to navigate the world of artificial intelligence and use AI tools like Gemini responsibly, effectively, and with integrity both in school and beyond.

Rather than treating AI as a shortcut to do their work for them, the training is designed to help students understand how the technology operates, recognize its limitations, and master the art of prompt engineering to get the best possible results.

Why Take The Responsible Use Training?

Students should take these courses to build critical digital literacy skills that protect them and enhance their academic performance. Specifically, the training teaches students how to:

1. Maintain Academic Integrity

• Avoid Cheating: The course helps students understand the line between using AI as a helpful tool versus academic dishonesty (such as copying and pasting AI outputs to finish a paper).

• Boost Talents, Not Replace Them: Students learn to use AI to kickstart the creative process, brainstorm ideas, overcome writer's block, or understand complex concepts.

2. Protect Their Personal Privacy

• Understand Data Risks: Students learn that many AI tools use input data to train their models.

• Safe Sharing Practices: The training explicitly teaches students what never to share with AI, including full names, birth dates, social security numbers, home addresses, or uploaded photos of school badges and IDs.

• Use Approved Tools: Students learn to rely on school-approved tools (like the version of Gemini configured for Dallas ISD students) that meet specific privacy standards and do not save student activity, unlike other public tools.

3. Develop Critical Thinking (Trust but Verify)

• Spot "Hallucinations": Students learn that AI can confidently invent false information or give incorrect answers when it lacks access to specific data or misunderstands a question.

• Recognize Bias: Because humans train AI models using information from the internet, students are taught that AI outputs can reflect human biases.

• Fact-Check: The course trains students to critically evaluate responses, investigate further when something feels off, and use Gemini's built-in fact-checking features to find original sources.

4. Master Effective Prompt Engineering (The P.A.R.T.S. Framework)

• Students learn that the quality of their prompt directly impacts the quality of the AI's output. They are taught to write clear, detailed prompts using specific building blocks:

  • Persona (giving the AI or themselves a specific role)

  • Aim (stating a clear objective with a verb)

  • Recipient (specifying the target audience)

  • Theme (describing the style, tone, or parameters)

  • Structure (noting the desired format, like a list, table, or paragraph)
